1. What is Knowledge Representation?

  1. Representational Adequacy:

    • The system must represent a wide variety of knowledge types, from concrete facts (e.g., “Paris is the capital of France”) to abstract concepts (e.g., “justice” or “freedom”).
    • For example, representing physical objects is relatively straightforward, but encoding social or ethical concepts can be much more challenging.
  2. Inferential Adequacy:

    • A KR system should not just store facts but should enable the AI to infer new information based on existing data.

  3. Inferential Efficiency:

    • Inference processes should be computationally efficient so that the system can make decisions or solve problems quickly.

  4. Acquisition and Learning:

    • The KR system must support acquiring new knowledge from data or experiences, especially as environments change or new information becomes available.

  5. Expressiveness vs. Tractability:

    • There is often a trade-off between the expressiveness of a KR system and its computational manageability. Highly expressive systems can describe complex relationships and rules but are harder to work with computationally.
    • A balance must be struck; otherwise, highly complex knowledge structures can make the system inefficient.

1. Types of representation

There are several common forms of representation in KR, each suited to different types of information and reasoning methods:

  1. Semantic Networks:

    • These are graph-based representations where concepts (like objects or ideas) are nodes, and relationships between them are edges.
